The site is famous for the 272 rainbow-painted steps leading to the main cave and the 42.7-metre gold statue of Lord Murugan at the base. Rainbow Steps & Main Cave
The 272 steps were repainted in rainbow colours in 2018 and have become one of Malaysia's most Instagrammed spots. The main Temple Cave at the top is a vast cavern with Hindu shrines and natural skylights.
Lord Murugan Statue
Standing 42.7 metres tall at the base of the steps, this gold statue of Lord Murugan is the tallest in the world. It took 3 years to build and is an impressive sight from ground level.
Dark Cave
A separate guided tour through an undeveloped cave system with unique wildlife — including the rare trapdoor spider. Educational and mildly adventurous. Torch and hard hat provided. Book on-site.

Go Early Morning
Arrive before 9am to beat the tour bus crowds and the midday heat. The steps are exposed to direct sun and there is no shade. Morning light is also best for photos.
Dress Appropriately
Batu Caves is an active Hindu temple. Cover shoulders and knees. Sarongs are available for rent at the base if needed. Remove shoes before entering shrine areas.
Watch the Monkeys
Macaque monkeys live around the caves and will snatch food, drinks, and bags. Keep belongings zipped and do not eat on the steps. They are entertaining to watch from a safe distance.
